Nothing MUCH, really but… An information IS an information. It may be sensitive or confidential.

The most a person could do with just st your a/c number is that they could open a PDF file of your account statement “if the passcode is your a/c number” which is generated automatically and sent to your mail. But for this, one has to gain access to your mail OR the PDF file.

So, this may be very difficult for the person. But, remember… An information IS an information. And it could be sensitive or confidential

In general nothing can be done by knowing only your account number. But if they know about your date of birth or your national security number then they can call up customer ser and can check your bank balance/ credit limit and your other bank details. So along with your banking details we ought to be careful about our personal details as these information are generally used by banks to verify the individual details before they disclose your bank details.

Account number is meant to be shared. It’s like your mobile number. What good is it if you never tell it to anyone?

You can’t withdraw money just by knowing the account number. So its safe that way.

The only flaw I see is that one can get your transaction history based on your account number. It can happen in a bank, if the teller doesn’t care to check for ID. Or it can happen through email statements as many of them are password protected and the password is your account number.

Most of the time, exchanging account information is fairly safe. Most banks are pretty competent at fraud prevention. Given the right tools and bad intentions, however, people can do almost anything with an account number if they know how. In the banking world, fraud occurs in many shapes and forms, and banks lose literally hundreds of thousands of dollars to it every month. That isn’t to say banks don’t try hard to prevent it, but identity theft happens every day. In fact one of our tellers got her debit card info stolen just last month.

At a distance, fraud is harder, but not impossible.

He can’t do anything except deposit. Becuase bank official wont even disclose bank balance to that person for your account unless he has some known person in the bank. If he has some known person in the bank, he can check bank balance in your account, statements…
