The stopcock connecting a 1.00 L bulb containing helium gas at a pressure of 554 torr,...

The stopcock connecting a 1.00 L bulb containing helium gas at a pressure of 554 torr, and a 1.00 L bulb containing krypton gas at a pressure of 504 torr, is opened and the gases are allowed to mix. Assuming that the temperature remains constant, the final pressure in the system is ____torr

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution :-

Total volume after mixing = 1.00 L + 1.00 L = 2.00 L

partial pressure of the Helium in the mixture = 1.00 L * 554 torr / 2.00 L = 277 torr

partial pressure of the krypton in the mixture = 1.00 L * 504 torr / 2.00 L = 252 torr

total pressure of the gases after mixing = P helium + P krypton

                                                              = 277 torr + 252 torr

                                                             = 529 torr

So the final pressure = 529 torr
