The success of any person depends on how competent he or she is . As someone has rightly said "He is not poor who has a competency ". This quote is enough to illustrate the importance of competency. Let us first understand what does competency mean - The term competency means The abilities and skills required to perform a job or task efficiently.
Professional Competency is a combination of skills set , attitude , behaviour, knowledge etc which is valued by the professional organisations such as company , or the work place a person works for . Professional competency can broadly be classified into two categories  -

  • Technical Competencies - It refers to the set of skills and knowledge which is critical to perform a job . For example- accountant's job may require him to have a fair knowledge of accounts , finance etc . An engineer working in the paint industry should have knowledge about the chemicals , it's reactions etc .
  • Behavioural /Leadership Competencies - These are the competencies which may not be required to perform a job but are essential for the successful completion of the particular job or task . For example - Competencies such as strategic thinking or planning and analysis may not be required for an accountant or an engineer to do his or her job but can add on for a successful completion of the task . Like a proper planning may lead to the timely completion of the task .

Importance of professional competency- Though it is true that there are basic skills or sets which a recruiter keeps as a filter to select the candidates like basic qualifications ( For an accountant job a degree in finance and accounting and for an engineer job a diploma or a degree in engineering) . After this filter of technical competency the recruiter further selects people based on the the kind of behavioural or leadership competency one has along with the technical competency . Because any recruiter or a manager does not see the candidate just taking up the job and continue doing the same job in the years to come . Rather they see the applicant continue growing and eventually taking the lead role in the firm , which is only possible when a person has both technical as well as the behavioural and leadership competency.

Consequences of lack of professional competency - With the importance of professional competency it is quite evident that what consequences could be there if a person lacks professional competency. To list few are as following-

  • Lack of technical competency may lead to loss of job .
  • lack behavioural and leadership competency but a fair knowledge of the technical competency may help a person to save his job but will not help him or her to flourish in his or her career .

This is the reason why more than hard skills (technical competency - such as task specific training)  corporates , schools and colleges are focusing more towards developing soft skills ( behavioural competency- time management, communication skills , team work etc ) in children's and their people . To make an important note here - The technical competency is required and must when a person is on lower level of hierarchy but as he grows in the hierarchy he needs to have more of behavioural and leadership competency)

Conclusion - Any field right from organisations to even a home maker require combination of all the competency to lead a successful life . Industry experts have always belived that a person can be taught as how to perform his job but the managerial and other people related skills is something which can not be taught rather it comes from within and that might be the reason why there has been a major shift from focusing on INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT to EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT . Will and conscious efforts in learning and developing a competency can help a person flourish not only on professional front but on personal front as well .
