Expert Solution
Double consciousness was a concept given by DuBois, which means
an individual's feeling as though their identity belonging to a
aprticular group is being divided into parts, making it difficult
for them to have one true identity. Its like having more than one
social identity, making it difficult for an individual to develop
sense of self.
He applied this concept to minority groups, especially African
Americans. He believed that African Americans lived in a society
which oppresses them and discriminates against them, not treating
them equally. But,at the same time, the African American culture
encourages equality.
This double consciousness has forced this minority group to
view themselves from both type of cultures, one which is
oppressive, and other which encourgaes equality, which makes it
difficult for them develop a sense of one identity and merge their
African-American sub- culture with their overall American
identity.
This double consciousness creates negative sense of self in
minorities about themselves and this internalization of anti black
perceptions or racism towards them from the larger American
culture, begins to create negative effect on their life due to
stereotypes and prejudices being developed about them.
