Using the following answer choices to determine the strongest attractive force in each compound and why.
a) london dispersion, b) dipole-dipole, c) hydrogen bond, d) ion-dipole, e) ionic
carbon monoxide, CO
Ammonia, NH3
Hexane, C6H14
Glycine an amino acid
CO is a non polar compound because of which it shows only weak london dispersion forces.
Ammonia which is a polar compound shows good hydrogen bonding because of this it shows enormous properties like high boiling point, liquid nature. etc.
In hexane on the other hand which is non polar, this compound shows induced dipole dipole interaction, which is because of electrons in hexane repel electrons of neighbouring hexane molecule which induced a small dipole, which then interacts with electron dense areas in our original molecule.
In glycine because of structure, it shows great property like solubility in ethanol. This happen so because of polar nature of glycine, it involves ion dipole interaction which makes it an essential compound for living.
