What is the strongest interparticle force in each of the five compounds: KMnO4, sucrose, Iodine, NiSO4 6H2O, naphthalene? What relationship exists between the IMF and the solubilities?
KMnO4 : This is an ionic compound, not molecular, made up of positive potassium ions, and negative permanganate ions. The strongest forces of attraction between those ions are called ionic bonds.
sucrose: This is a polar molecule containing hydrogen bonded to a small and highly electronegative atom of oxygen. The strongest intermolecular forces of attraction between sucrose molecules are hydrogen bonding.
Iodine : It is a homodiatomic molecule. So it has no polarity. The strongest interparticle force is London dispersion force.
NiSO4 6H2O : This is an ionic compound, not molecular, made up of positive potassium ions, and negative permanganate ions. The strongest forces of attraction between those ions are called ionic bonds.
naphthalene: Induced Dipole forces.
Stronger intermolecular forces ? molecules are more attracted to each other ? they stick together better. So the solubility decreases with increasing the intermoleculat forces.
