1- Ethical egoism is both Hedonistic and consequentialistic. Explain this means
Ethical egoism is hedonistic in the sense that a person would want all of their pleasures to be above the pleasures of everyone else. This is both at individual level and at universal level. Ethical egoism is consequentialist such that the consequences of an individual should be more important that the result. As a result, egoism prescribes if the actions thsf would be detrimental, beneficial as well as for the neutral to the larger people.
2- What is Rachel’s argument against ethical egoism?
According to Rachel, ethical egoism refers to the view where people should be acting irrespective of the effect it should have on other people. The egoists, do not think of the feelings of other people, of their emotions. Thus, this idea is not universal. And something that is not universal cannot be regarded for the good of everyone.
3. Be sure to explain what the principle of equal treatment is, and how ethical egoism violates thy principle?
The principle of equal principle states that “we should treat people in the same way unless there is compelling reason not to do so”. Ethical egoism violates this principle as it does not see others being treated in the same manner as us. Me, I should be given special treatment with exclusive privileges, which violates the principle of equal treatment.
