Emotional intelligence can be defined as the attributes and ability of the person to communicate, influence, initiate change and accept change. The attributes includes self-awareness, self-confidence, self-control, commitment and integrity. As per Goleman, the emotional intelligence has direct impact on the leadership ability of a person.

The leadership ability to make effective decision is impacted by three most important aspect of emotional intelligence. They are:-

  • Self-awareness
  • Communication and influence
  • Commitment and integrity

Also, it is very important for the managers to develop their emotional intelligence in order to build good relationships with peers, subordinate and stakeholders.

Goleman also focused on a model of five dimensions and has unique behavioral attributes. They are:-

  • Self-awareness - It helps in gaining confidence and focus on self-assessment.
  • Self-management or self-regulation - focus on self-control, trustworthiness, adaptability, innovation etc.
  • Motivation - it helps in fulfilling the goal. It consists of achievement drive, commitment, initiative and optimism.
  • Empathy - understanding other's feelings, needs, desires etc.
  • Social skills - helps in interacting effectively with others and maintain good relationships.

Emotional intelligence is important for leaderl's success because: -

  • It helps our mind to cope up with stressful situations and thus take care of our body both physically and mentally.
  • It change or influence our perspective towards life. It help us to cope up with different situations like anxiety, depression and mood swings. The positive attitude of an individual depends on the highest level of emotional intelligence.
  • It helps in improving the communication process between individuals and better understand and manage emotions. Thus it contributes towards relationship building.
  • It helps in understanding the needs, feelings of others and makes the relationship stronger.
  • Emotional intelligence plays important role in resolving conflict and even helps in avoiding conflict as it helps in understanding the needs of others.
  • It act as an internal motivator and increase self-confidence. It make us more focused towards achieving our goal.
