What is intrinsic and extrinsic workability?
Extrinsic workability -Motivated to perform an activity to earn a reward or avoid punishment.
Intrinsic workability -Motivated to perform an activity for its own sake and personal rewards.
The Two-Factor Theory of job satisfaction distinguishes between intrinsic-motivation (i.e. recognition, responsibility) and extrinsic-hygiene (i.e. job security, salary, working conditions) factors. The presence of intrinsic-motivation facilitates higher satisfaction and performance, whereas the absences of extrinsic factors help mitigate against dissatisfaction. The consideration of these factors and their impact on dentists’ job satisfaction is essential for the recruitment and retention of dentists.
Extrinsic motivation refers to the performance of an activity to attain an out- come . A study by Goetz et al. showed that intrinsic motivators have the most positive impact on job satisfaction of dentists in Germany , while Sicsic et al. wanted to send a cautionary message on the potential negative effects of increasing extrinsic motivation among French general practitioners through their pay-for-performance policy . Hackman and Oldham argued that five core job characteristics (skill variety, task identity , task significance, autonomy, and feedback) affect three psychological states (experienced meaningfulness, responsibility for outcomes, and knowledge of actual results) that, in turn, influence job performance, job satisfaction, motivation, and turnover . Herzberg pointed out that certain factors cause job satisfaction, while a separate set of factors cause dissatisfaction . Spector's job satisfaction survey assesses job satisfaction through nine job facets: pay, promotion, supervision, fringe benefits, contingent rewards, operating procedures, co-workers, nature of work, and com- munication .They were internally motivated to do this work because it brings them pleasure. This motivation is conceptualized as intrinsic motivation. Previous studies partially confirm this finding and add that positive feelings of health workers are related to their ability to help and care for stigmatized people.
