S. epidermidis mainly colonizes human skin and is a health concern due to its involvement in hospital-acquired infections.
Staphylococcus epidermidis is one of the most frequent nosocomial pathogens.
Biofilm formation, exopolymers and other mechanisms protect S. epidermidis from antibiotics and host defenses.
S. epidermidis functions as a reservoir for genes that can be transferred to Staphylococcus aureus, enhancing the pathogenic success and antibiotic resistance of this more dangerous pathogen.
S. epidermidis is thought to provide benefits to human host, including out-competing more virulent pathogens.
However, largely due to its capacity to form biofilm on implanted foreign bodies, S. epidermidis has emerged as an important opportunistic pathogen in patients receiving medical devices.
