Two streptococcus pneumonia strains, agent 1 and agent 2, are administered to groups of animals at different doses. Mortality rates are then measured for the animals that received each dose level of each agent. Agent 1 found to have an LD50 of 400. Agent 2 was found to have an LD50 of 600.

a) Which one is producing a capsule and which one is not? Why?

b) Briefly explain 2 ways in which bacterial capsules facilitate host colonization and pathogenesis.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) Since LD50 of agent 1 is lower, the agent 1 is more virulent as there is inverse relation between LD50 and virulence.
Presence of capsule makes the bacteria more virulent as it prevents their phagocytosis and help in adherence to the host cell. This means that the agent 1 is producing capsule and agent 2 is not.

b) 1. Capsule contain large amount of water which it turn exclude the viruses and hydrophobic toxins. This prevents the killing of bacteria by desiccation and makes it more pathogenic. Presence of capsule also prevents the phagocytosis of bacteria from the cells of the host's immune system and thereby ensure its pathogenicity.
2. The glycocaclyx of capsule serve to help the bacteria to adhere to the tissue surfaces in the host body.

1. (Public Goods Game) Suppose that there are two people, Agent 1 and Agent 2 in a town. Assume that there is no street light in the town. To build a street light, someone should pay costs and once it is built, everyone can enjoy the benefit of street light as there is no way to force not to use it. Once the street light is build, while Agent 1 has 10 payoff, Agent 2 has 5 payoff. If only...

Hybrid usually refers to animals or plants resulting from a cross between two races, breeds, strains, or varieties of the same species. Using ONE (1) specific hybrid animal that are actually exist in the world, explain in details how this hybrid animal is formed. Your explanation should include the parents involved, compare their characteristics to their parents, their respective genetic components, barriers involved to get the hybrid animal and ways to get the hybrid animal. You have 2 strains of bacteria, strain 1 = trpA- trpB- trpC+ and strain 2 = trpA+ trpB+trpC-. You grow P1 transducing phage on strain 1 (you infect strain 1 with the phage), then infect strain 2 with this lysate and select for transductants on minimal medium (trpA,B,C mutants are all Trp auxotrophs). You get 1000 transductants growing with 0.1 ml lysate. You then infect strain 2 with your phage, then transduce strain 1 and get 15 transductants. a. What...
