5 + (3 * 4)^2 - 2 = 147

            (5 + 3) * 4^2 - 2 = 126

            (5 + 3 )* (4^2 – 2) = 112

            5 + (3 * 4^2) - 2 = 51

  1. Which is the correct answer to using the "order of precedence" and why?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The order of precedence is the order in which the equation should be solved.

Follow order of operations: parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. With multiplication and division and addition and subtraction being of equal precedence.

1)5 + (3 * 4)^2 - 2 = 147

parenthesis:3*4=12,exponents:(3 * 4)^2 = 12^2 = 144.,addition and subtraction:5 + (3 * 4)^2 - 2 = 5+144-2 = 147.

Therefore ,this equation is solved correctly using the order of precedence.

2)(5 + 3) * 4^2 - 2 = 126

parenthesis:(5 + 3) = 8,exponents:4^2 = 16

so equation becomes:(5 + 3) * 4^2 - 2= 8*16 - 2=128 - 2=126

Therefore ,this equation is solved correctly using the order of precedence

3)(5 + 3 )* (4^2 – 2) = 112

parenthesis:(5 + 3 )=8, (4^2 – 2) = 16 - 2 = 14 ,where exponents:4^2=16,Now multiplication:8*14=112.

Therefore ,this equation is solved correctly using the order of precedence.

4)5 + (3 * 4^2) - 2 = 51

parenthesis:(3 * 4^2=3*16 = 48 ,where exponents:4^2=16,

Now addition and subtraction:5 + (3 * 4^2) - 2 = 5 + 48 - 2= 51.

Therefore ,this equation is solved correctly using the order of precedence.
