Which correctly describes the process by which carbon black is produced?
(A) Carbon black will form from any carbon-containing substance held at sufficiently high temperature and pressure.
(B) Carbon black forms during the incomplete combustion of wood.
(C) Carbon black forms during the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons like methane.
(D)Carbon black forms during the incomplete combustion of coal.
Hi there,
Answer: (C) Carbon black forms during the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons like methane.
Carbon black is produced by the incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel such as oil or gas, fossil fuels, wood and other fuels with a limited supply of combustion air, Methane is a simplest hydrocarbon and completely combust to give CO2 & H2O, but we can manage to get carbon black as it gives finest carbon footprint. Since town gas consist of CO, H2 and CH4 from the incomplete combustion of coal. Wood gives first coal not carbon black.
Hope this helped you!
