If Dylan has 8.50 x 10^3 pounds of 18k gold, how much 12 k gold must he mix with the 18k gold to obtain 63% pure gold?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer – We are given mass of 18 K gold = 8.50 *103 lb, mass percent pf pure gold = 63 % , mass of 12 K gold = ?

We know the mass of pure18 K gold and we need to calculate mass of 12 K gold which we need to mix in 18K gold. After mixing the 12 K gold there is mass percent of pure 18K gold is 63 %, so

Mass Percent of 18 K gold = mas of 18 K gold / total mass of mixed gold * 100 %

Total mass of mixed gold = mas of 18 K gold / Mass Percent of 18 K gold * 100 %

                                          = 8.50 *103 lb / 63 % * 100 %

                                          = 1.349 *104 lb

Now we know mixed mass of gold is = mass of pure 18 K gold + mass of 12 K gold

So, mass of 12 K gold = Total mass of mixed gold – mass of pure 18K gold

                                   = 1.349 *104 lb - 8.50 *103 lb

                                   = 4.99*103 lb

So, 4.99*103 lb of 12 k gold must he mix with the 18k gold to obtain 63% pure gold.
