The case: Advanced Airport Passenger Processing System

As the IT Manager, you were tasked to improve the performance of the local airport passenger processing system by addition new IT sections. The new airport will have less employees and faster passenger processing. This is to make the airport more efficient and more secure. The new system will replace the boarding-pass and ID Control personnel with IT System (consists of Hardware and software) . The passenger will walk through a passage surrounded with cameras and other remote readers.

Questions

  1. Why do we need System Testing for this New airport passenger processing system?
  2. Why do we need to use systematic testing strategies?
  3. What would be cost of not testing the new airport passenger processing system
  4. The difference between Validation and Verification?
  5. Testing Goal for airport passenger processing system has to have level 3 Test Process Maturity level. How can you describe the purpose of this system testing?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  1. The aim of System Testing for this New airport passenger processing system is to ensure that   the System will function correctly when all the units/functions/features are combined as a whole. Therefore System Testing is called a black-box testing. The units for this New passenger processing system can be:
  • Hardware components like : cameras , other remote sensors,monitoring devices,etc
  • Software ,used to process the passenger data collected by the Hardware

The System Testing enables us to test, verify and validate both the Business requirements as well as the Application Architecture of the New passenger processing System.

2. Test Strategy is a guideline to be followed to achieve the test objective and execution of test types mentioned in the testing plan. We need Systematic Testing Strategies :

  • To assess the risk of product (New passenger processing System ) or the environment.
  • Expertise and experience of the people in the proposed tools and techniques like handling comeras, fixing bugs, etc.

3. Testing is a crucial stage in any System especially in this Advanced Airport Passenger Processing System.

If we ignore testing then we would be missing out on key aspects/insights like the speed, scalability, reliability, performance of system under stress ; and thus miss out the chance on modifying and improving the new airport passenger processing system while the prcess is under development itself.

-There is High Cost of Error Fixes Post-Launch , not to mention the Loss of Reputation of the company and the Process System ,thus hindering Development.

4.

Validation Verification
It emphasizes on user requirements It concentrates on the design and system specifications
It answers : "Are we developing the product which attempts all that user needs from this software ?" It answers : "Are we developing this product by firmly following all design specifications ?"
It includes the execution of the code It does not include verification of the code
It is dynamic testing It is static testing

Verification is done before Validation.

5. The purpose of Level 3 Test Process Maturity level for airport passenger processing system is : Integration of testing into the Software lifecycle as previously bit was just the Boarding Pass and the security personnel ,and almost no software involve but now, with Cameras and other remote readers ,it becomes crucial to test and integratre hardware and software.Testing is recognised as a professional activity in level 3.
