Boron is the fifth element in the periodic table. For the first ionization of boron, the ionization energy is 0.8006 MJ/mol. Calculate the effective nuclear charge (Zeff) for the first ionization of boron.
Effective nuclear charge (Zeff) = sq.rt.(E.n^2/Rh)
Rh = 2.178 x 10^-21 kJ
E = 0.8006 MJ/mol = 800.6 kJ/mol
n = 2
we get Zeff for boron,
Zeff = sq.rt.(800.6 x 2^2/2.178 x 10^-21) = 1.21 x 10^12 mol-1
