Question One
Creep is one of the deformations that occurred in a concrete structure.
Give one example that can be associated with creep problem in the concrete structure. Define what is a creep and discuss how the creep occurred in the chosen example.
Creep of concrete
It is the defined as the deformation of a structure under sustained load.
It is a time-dependent process and does not necessarily cause concrete to fail or fracture.
It is a factored in concrete structures that are designed i.e. which means all possible subsequent deformation is already accounted for in the design process.
Factors affecting creep are-
(i)Coarse aggregate used - Higher the modulus of elasticity of aggregate lesser will be the creep.
(ii)Mix proportions-The amount and quality of cement paste used in the concrete is very important factor controlling creep. Creep increases with increasing water cement ratio and decreases with richer quality cement paste used.
(iii)Age of loading the structure-The value of creep decreases as the age at which the concrete member load gets increased.
Example associated with creep problem in the concrete structure and the creep occurred in the chosen example is shown in problem given below-
