Design a concrete mix for reinforced concrete beams of a structure. The structure is located in a locality wherein water has excess of chlorides in it. Required average compressive strength of concrete has been determined to be 4700 psi. Beams have cross-section of 9 in. x 21 in. reinforced with 4 # 6 bars. Reinforcement has a concrete cover of 1.25 in. and there is a clear space of 1.0 in. between form surface and steel bars. Fine aggregate has bulk specific gravity (SSD) of 2.63; absorption capacity of 1.25%; surface moisture of 3.0% and a fineness modulus of 2.75. Coarse aggregate has bulk specific gravity (SSD) of 2.70; absorption capacity of 2.50 %; surface moisture of 1.75% based on SSD state and dry-rodded unit weight of 110 lb/ft3. Design concrete mix following the step-by-step method of ACI 211.1-91 for the subject beams and tabulate the quantities of ingredient materials in lb/yd3, lb/ft3 and 1.5 lb/ft3. Provide reference of relevant ACI Tables in each step.

Design a reinforced concrete wall footing to carry a 10 in thick reinforced concrete wall. Service loads are 6 kips/ft dead load and 15 kips/ft live load. The allowable soil pressure is 2 tons per sf. Assume that the bottom of the footing is to be 8.5 feet below grade and the weight of the soil can be assume to be 110 PCF. Design a concrete mix using ACI Method required for an exterior column to be located above ground level in an area where it will be wet and subjected to substantial freezing and thawing. The concrete is required to have an average 28-day compressive strength of 30 MPa. For the conditions of placement, the slump should be between 25 and 100 mm. The column is 300 mm square with a minimum clear space for aggregate of 50 mm. The properties of...

A reinforced concrete bearing wall supports 12” wide beams bearing on the full width of the wall spaced 10’ o.c. The bottom of the wall is a fixed connection. The top of the wall is a pinned connection. The wall is 20’ tall. The load from each beam, Pu, is 30 kips. Determine whether a 10” wide wall will work for this condition. Select vertical and horizontal reinforcing steel.

A concrete mix is required for reinforced concrete wave breaker at seashore where frequent mild freezing and thawing is dominant. A specified compressive strength of 25 MPa is required at the age of 28 days, and the size of the section and reinforcement dictate using a maximum aggregate size of 19 mm. The company had no history of testing concrete used. The coarse aggregate meets the ASTM grading requirements. It has absorption of 2%, a BSG (D) of 2.70 and...
