Organic chemistry IUPAC nomenclature

Write down the IUPAC name of the organic compund Cl3C-CH2-CHO

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution:

For assigning an IUPAC name to an organic compound, first we have to number

the carbons in order to select the longest carbon chain.

The structure of the given compound

3 2 1

\(\mathrm{Cl}_{3}-\mathrm{C}-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-\mathrm{CHO}\)

Now, from the given structure we can see that the

carbon-1 possess aldehyde group (-CHO),

carbon-3 contains 3 chlorine group(-Cl).

The longest carbon chain consists of 3 carbons.

Hence, the IUPAC name of the compound is 3,3,3-trichloropropanal.

The IUPAC name of Cl3C-CH2-CHO is 3,3,3-trichloropropanal
