1) Identify the type of steel (alloy?) with values similar to the following:

Modulus of Elasticity = 189.75 MPa

Ultimate Tensile Strenght (UTS) = 740.05 MPa

Cup Cone Fracture

Toughness = 4.84 MPa

2) Identify the type of treated steel(alloy?) with values similar to the following:

Modulus of Elasticity = 326.07 MPa

Ultimate Tensile Strenght (UTS) = 408.97 MPa

Cup Cone Fracture

Toughness = 140.91 MPa

My guess is that this one is some type of heat treated steel, the steel being the same type as 1) but I do not know how to identify it.

3) Identify the type of brass (alloy?) with values similar to the following:

Modulus of Elasticity = 84.88 MPa

Ultimate Tensile Strenght (UTS) = 480.34 MPa

Diaginal, Rough Fracture

Toughness = 76.47 MPa

All of these values have been calculated from a Tensile Test machine and by hand so there is room for error.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) Since the ultimate tensile strength is very high for this type of steel, it must be quneched and tempered hot rolled steel. When looked in standard steel charts, ASTM A514 Grade B has the given properties. It has Young's modulus of 195 GPa at room temperature. Being a ductile material, it will produce a cup cone fracture pattern upon excessive loading.

2) Looking at the properties, it fits best for AK steel 409 Ferritic stainless steel which has UTS of 414 MPa and Young's modulus of 208 GPa (Please check your value as Young' modulus for steel is not as high as 326 GPa). It also has a toughness of 117 MPa at high temperatures. Being a ductile material, it will produce a cup cone fracture pattern upon excessive loading.

3) It is a brass alloy CZ131 with tensile strength of 480 MPa and Young's modulus of 105 GPa. It also gives rought fracture patten upon excessive loading with thoughness of 82 MPa.
