Cell division is a process in which the cells grow and then divide into four daughter cells. There are two types of cell division that take place in the body. This depends on the time of life the organism at and on the type of tissue/organ the division is takin place in. Meiosis is also called a reduction division because the genomic content gets reduced to half in daughter cells. Meiosis is pre-dominant cell division after fertilization in zygote, at early stages of life to increase the cell mass which then get differentiated an specialized to form into tissues, then organ and finally an organism. Meiosis is further divided into two parts- meiosis I and Meiosis II, it is Meiosis I actually that is reductive division. Meiosis II is similar to the mitosis. In meiosis I a diploid cell for example gets reduced to two haploid daughter cells which further divide to produce 4 haplloid daughter cells. In a mature organism, meiosis takes place in reproductive tissues which have diploid precursors which further produce haploid gametes. The phases of the cell cycle- G1, S, G2, M remain the same in bothe mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is a process which is occurring in all the cells of the body. The process produces haploid daughter cells from haploid parental cells- the ploidy remains the same. The process helps the cells of the body to replace the old cells by new cells by this process. All the cells in our body undergo the process of mitosis.
