Providing culturally sensitive care is an important component of patient centered-care. Nurses must strive to enhance their ability to provide patient-centered care by reflecting on how their and the patient’s culture’s, values, and beliefs impact the nurse-patient relationship. The nurse also must understand how bio-psychosocial needs and cultural background relate to health care needs. This cultural assessment and culturally oriented care enables the nurse to identify ways with which the client's culture and its features impact on their perceptions, beliefs, values, experiences with health, wellness, illness, suffering, and even death. Remain accepting, respectful and welcoming of human diversity.
The nurse must ask about their cultures and beliefs in a hospital. Some of the patient and their relatives may not accept resuscitation in their critical illness. They are thinking that that is not a good way to recover and the spirit cannot live peacefully in their world. Even though these are the misconception , the nurse should follow their tradition. In my experience ,one community called "Sunni Muslims" wont allow to touch by female doctors and nurses. They are thinking that ,seeking of treatment by a female doctor is a sin. So we must follow their beliefs so that they can get good results by boosting their confidence. Some of the patients, especially in India ,they used to keep their God,s picture nearby their head so that they can be get cured as early as possible. It’s important that nurses avoid making assumptions about cultures they aren’t familiar with. This can lead to a breakdown of trust and rapport between the nurse and their patient and reduce treatment acceptance.
Think about the different cultures you’ve encountered in your healthcare career, as well as the cultures that are within your community. Make an effort to learn about those cultures by becoming immersed in them. Visit the area where that culture is dominant and read about the culture from reputable books and online sources. Question any assumptions you have about cultures that are not your own and make an effort to either prove or disprove the assumption and turn it into knowledge. It’s essential for nurses to build trust with their patients, regardless of ethnic or racial backgrounds. However, treating culturally diverse patients require a heightened level of trust to be established.
In today’s changing cultural climate, it’s no longer a choice to become culturally sensitive, it’s a necessity. Nurses will need to work hard at becoming aware of cultural differences and providing culturally competent care.
