In order to find out the hybrid orbitals we need to find out first the hybridization of the compound, as type of hybridization= type of hybrid orbitals in it.

Steps to find out hybridization:

  1. Find out the central atom, i.e the least electronegative single atom in the compound and others are surrounding atoms.
  2. The find out the valence electrons(V.E) of the central metal atoms(C.M).
  3. Make bond pairs of one valence electrons with one surrounding atom.
  4. If electrons still left after making bond pairs , then make pair of the rest, that are lone pairs.
  5. Then assign s, p, d orbitals serially to the bond pairs and lone pairs(one s , then three p. then five d, according to the requirement in each compound)
  6. First assign s orbital, then p if all the three s orbitals are used and still bond pairs or lone pairs remain then, come to d orbitals.
