Draw the resonance hybrid structure for ClF3. Indicate the formal charge for each atom and the bond order for each bond (two Cl-F bonds are 170 pm and one Cl-F bond is 160 pm). Thanks!

Solutions

Expert Solution

The formal charge for each fliorine will be same i.e. zero.

The shape of ClF3 is T-shape in which the two bonds are longer than the other bond. This is in accordance with bent's rule which states that the most electronegative atom will tend to occupy that position where s-character will be poor. At axial positions the bonds are long and s-character is poor.

The bond order for all Cl-F bonds is one.
