How might protein production by genetic engineering biotechnology be useful to you? Give a real or imagined example.
Proteins are the main biomolecules responsible for the biological catalytic reaction. In many disease a single protein or enzyme is sufficient to regulate the disease. Use of genetic engineering manipulations has led to the strategy to modify food crops in such a way that they display resistance against pathogens, production of a particular foreign protein into a fruit so that it increases the nutrition value. The genetic engineering manipulations are also used to produce human disease specific antibodies to generate large amount of antibodies. Let’s take the example of “Roundup ready Soybean” which is produced by Monsanto and has Glyphosate resistance. Glyphosate is herbicide used to kill weed, however crop plant also affected by it since it inhibits the synthesis of essential amino acid. Scientist have produced genetically modified soybean by introducing gene encoding EPSPS protein which made plants resistance to glyphosate spray and thus this can be used as crop to feed us.
