Drug production – What substances are being produced by genetic engineering and how do they affect human health?
Genetic engineering is the branch in which recombinant DNAs are made by joining the Plasmid/vector with gene of interest. These genes are of particular substrates. By use of genetic engineering, one can able to produce the substrate in a particular system which was not expressed in wild type or natural type of that system. For example, Insulin is the major component used treat diabetic patients. Before the r-DNA era, it was extracted from animal origins (human pancreatic cells). Now a day insulin gene was successfully cloned in and transfers in to E.coli cells. This way not only insulin production was increased but animals are also saved. More over it is less harmful as the cloned gene itself originated for human.
This is how genetic engineering can substrates are produced and it will helpful to human health.
Substances that can produced in this ways are antibiotic, enzymes etc...
Following is the diagram which give brief idea of cloning- genetic engineering.
