Describe one potential new antibiotic or other medical interventions (i.e. bacteriophages) that might be useful against Clostridioides difficile . Explain specifically how this drug would kill the bacteria or interfere with the disease.
Clostridioides difficile is a Gram-positive and toxin-producing bacillus. It is resistant to a number of antibiotics. Till date, treatment of CDI involves oral metronidazole or vancomycin but none of these is fully effective.
Recently it has been found that fidaxomicin can prevent recurrence
None of the three treatments i.e oral metronidazole. Vancomycin and fidaxomicin are bacteriostatic or bactericidal in nature. In fact they cure the disease by reducing bacterial burden and toxin levels. In general they lead to activation of deactivated IL-33 and creation of an early influx of neutrophils as a host defense mechanisms
