Compare and contrast the Transtheoretical Model and BJ Fogg’s Behavior Gridd.
According to the Transtheoretical Model; behavior change happens in five stages sequential:
Precontemplation; a stage when one is not planning to change within the next 6 months,
Contemplation; when one thinks about change,
Preparation; when one starts taking steps towards changing,
Action; when one attempts the change, and
Maintenance; a condition beaning able to sustain behavior change for more than 6 months and preventing relapse.
Apart from these stages; in facilitating movement between different stages, ten processes of change are important and two additional variables play a role of influencing: decisional balance i.e. evaluating the pros and cons of changing and self-efficacy.
BJ Fogg’s Behavior Grid; outlines fifteen different types of behaviors; the grid tells the ways the behavior can change. Further according to this model; Motivation, Ability, and Trigger are the three elements that must converge at the same moment for a behavior to occur: if a behavior is not occurring, at least one of these three elements is missing. Thus what stops users from performing behaviors that designers seek can be identified. For example, if people are not rating hotels on a travel website i.e. performing the target behavior, the FBM can help designers find what psychological element is lacking.
Thus, in contrast, tpo the Transtheoretical Model the BJ Fogg’s Behavior Grid is more interactive as it tells us the ways of changing the behavior.
