A reflective summary of the transtheoretical Model and the Precaution Adoption Process Model
Transtheoretical Model:
The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) was developed by Prochaska and DiClemente (1984, 1986) within a clinical context describing the behavior change process for addictive behavior. Thus, TTM is related to the model of behavior change. It is an integrative theory of therapy that assesses an individual's readiness to act on a new healthier behavior. TTM posits that health behavior change involves progress through following six stages. Earlier there were five stages, sixth stage was added later.:
I - Precontemplation (Not Ready),
II - Contemplation (Getting Ready),
III - Preparation (Ready),
IV - Action (Current Action),
V - Maintenance (Monitoring), and
VI - Termination
The process of change is very gradual and requires lot of patience and persistence.
Precaution Adoption Process Model:
The Precaution Adoption Process Model (PAPM) is a psychologically focused model that attempts to describe how a person comes to a new decision to take action and how he translates that decision into action. It involves following stages:
I - Unaware of issue,
II - Unengaged by issue,
III - Deciding about acting,
IV - If decided not to act then STOP here,
V - If decided to act then,
VI - Acting,
VII - Maintenance.
This model explains the adoption of new health protective behaviors.
