Compare and contrast the theoretic model of behavior change with the health belief model. Have you ever successfully gone through all of the stages of the transtheoretical model? Explain. If not, what stage is it that you have been stuck/stopped in? Why do you think this is?

Expert Solution

  • Health belief model: A classical theory about making changes that was developed by psychologist I. Rosenstock in 1966. In this model, there are five things that our beliefs must indicate in order for change to actually happen.
  • Those five things are: perceived seriousness of the health problem, perceived susceptibility to the health problem, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action. This model is followed daily and guides most decisions. The more someone feels they are at risk, the more likely they are to change their behavior and make healthier decisions.
  • The transtheoretical model is also a model of behavior change, but this one was developed by two scientists named Prochaska and DiClemente. This model has 6 stages, but they are not necessarily followed in sequence.
  • These stages are: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination. Some stages may overlap, some people may move back and forth between the stages, and others may swiftly follow them in order. Each stage is another step towards making a behavioral change.
  • I have not completed all the stages of the transthereotical theory. My behaviour change was about improving my lifestyle and becoming fit by focusing on increasing my stamina and toning by body.Which basically stopped at contemplation stage and didnt go to the preparation stage of joining a gym.
  • I knew I had to make a change in my health behaviour and was aware of it but didnt really take an action about it due to lack of focus and determination to make that big change.Taking a decision and implementing that decision are two different things which clearly did not happen in my case, since I had excuses about lack of time due to work and just not being too serious about it.
