Prochaska identifies five stages of behavior change in the transtheoretical model and applies this model to varied populations. Which two of these applications have the greatest significance to you as a doctoral researcher? Why?
Dr James prochaska states that change is good and it is difficult to achieve. The five stages of change are precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintanence. The precontemplation stage is there is a precursor to the actual model, the contemplation stage is characterized by awareness of a problem along with some thought of contemplation about overcoming a problem, preparation stage also known as decision stage is when a client makes a decision to change and makes preparation to make changes, action stage is when individuals modify their behaviour and experiences to overcome problems, maintenance is when clients have changed and adopted newhabits in their lifestyle to maintain a longterm sustainablity. The last stage would include a termination stage where the client no longer needs a systematic approach to change. The contemplation stage and the preparation stage is helpful in signifance of the research .To conduct a research on health awareness or disease prevention in a rural health setting. The first stage is to provide the client with adequate information on change and the need to change. The pros and cons are put forth for the community to understand the benefits of the change.Options are given based on interventions. For example if the intervention was to prevent tobacco use we can convey messages to the target population about the ill effects of tobbaco and the causes of cancer ,TB associated with it.The next step as the preparation stage leads them to understand the effects and ponder over the information that was conveyed to them. They are willing to make lifestyle changes and cut down the use of of tobbacco products may be to less consumption.
