Ans: The colostomy patient should be trained related to different kinds of care to follow after discharge.
Discharge instructions:
1. Always used medical gloves when you empty or clean that area of body. Small careless leads to infections. Always empty the pouch when it filled 40 to 50 percent before you change the system. A full pouch creat pressure on the seal and become reason of leak or spill.
2. Always take care of pouch to prevent it from getting soiled by roll the end of pouch.
3.Always squeeze or drain the pouch into the toilet by using toilet paper into the toilet seat to prevent splashing backwards or onto a surface that is near it.
4. Always clean the pouch with tissue paper or washed or clean towel at the end of the drainage.
5. After it unroll the end of pouch, as directed by physician (Replace the clamp or close the end of pouch).
6.The pouch must be change after a period of time according to the expiry or duration of the pouch, The pouch are available in different time period or duration.
Some pouch stay: 3 to 7 days.
Others pouch stay: 1 to 3 months.
After the duration the pouch must be changed frequently.
7. If your pouch is a one-piece system: Empty the pouch before removing. Remove the pouch gently by pushing skin down with one hand and away from the adhesive skin barrier, and pull the pouch up by second hand and away from the stoma.
8. Always clean the skin related to stoma by using prescribed soap, and after that dry the skin carefully.
9. To protect skin from rashes or irritation use skin barrier products.
10. Educate them to follow instruction during the disposal and change of old pouch bags.
11. check your skin near by the stoma at regular interval of time during change your pouch system.
These all instructions help to recure that area in a better way.
