Create a discharge instructions sheet for a patient who is s/p TURP, include medications
Discharge instructions:
-(Transurethral surgical resection of the prostate - surgical instrument is introduced into the urethra and the area of obstruction are cut away) take vital signs every 2 hours initially, monitor for pallor and rising pulse, monitor for potential for bleeding, urethral stricture, fistula, urinary incontinence, bladder neck constriction, administer stool softeners to prevent straining
-It's common to feel tired and under the weather for a week or two after having a TURP. Most men are up and about after this time, but you'll need to take things easy for up to 2 months. For the first few weeks, you shouldn't lift or move any heavy objects (including shopping) or do any strenuous exercise.
-Watch for excessive bleeding, pain with bladder spasms, urinary incontinence, and infection.
-Triple lumen catheter for bladder irrigation
-Sterile NS continuous irrigation
-Input and output MUST match
-Peri-care
-Avoid activities that increase abdominal pressure like sitting or
walking a long time, straining
-Sphincter tone-Kegels
-It may take weeks to gain control of urine; continence can improve
for up to 12 months
- If urine appears bloody, stop activity and rest.
-Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages.
-Take a stool softener once a day.
