. Give brief information about the usage of iron supplements
Ans: Usage of Iron supplements:
Iron is most important element of our body, it help in the transportation of blood into each organ of the body. Approximately 70 percent blood found in the hemoglobin (RBC) and muscle cells (Myoglobin).
Hemoglobin Role: It plays an essential role in transferring oxygen in body blood from the lungs to the tissues. Myoglobin Role: Myoglobin present in muscle cells, it accepts, stores, transports and releases oxygen.
Iron supplements usage:
1. Iron has a significant role in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen with blood around the body.
2. 6 to 7 percent of iron are used to form protein in the body, which is for respiration and energy metabolism.
3. Out of 6 percent, some iron elements are essential part of enzyme, which are part of collagen protein and neurotransmitter.
4. It is used for proper functioning of immune system.
5. Iron stores in the body in the form of ferritin.
6. The required adult minimum daily dose of iron is 1.8 mg.
7. Only few part of iron like 10 to 30 percent of consuming is absorbed and used by the body.
8. Iron help in the improvement of oxygen storage through myoglobin.
9. Iron also plays a key role in the making of red blood cells.
10. Iron supplements are most often used for certain types of anemia (A disease due to low level of RBC).
How much iron should intake according to a category?
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) includes the iron according to the categories, you get iron from both the food you eat and any supplements you take.
Category: Children.
Age 7-12 months = 11mg/day.
Age 1-3 years =7mg/day.
Age 4-8 years = 10mg/day.
Age 9-13 Years = 8mg/day.
Category: Female.
Age 14-18 years = 15mg/day.
Age 19-50 years = 18mg/day.
Age 51 years and above = 8mg/day.
For pregnant ladies: 27mg/day.
Category: Males = 11mg/day
