1. What are the major leadership styles? Which style is optimal to use in which situation?
1. Major leadership styles:
Leadership's is the capacity of someone to lead others or it is the office or status of a leader. Leadership style is the chatacteristics behaviours of a leader while exercising his leadership role. Leaders adapt different leadership styles . The major Leadership styles are : Autocratic , Democratic and Delegative leadership styles. Autocratic leadership also called as Authoritarian leadership style, which focusing on providing clear expectations to the followers on 'what , how and when to be done ' . Democratic leadership also called as Participatve leadership, in which the Leader allow followers to give inputs and they participate in planning a project/ task and leader give them the guidance also to all. Delegative leadership also known as Laissez Faire leadership, in which the decision making leave to the followers and no guidance will be provided. This is the least effective leadership style among three leadership styles.
Leadership styles and situations:
A) Authoritarian leadership: In this leadership style , the decision making will be solely on leaders, Opinions and suggestions from the followers are not encouraged but clear expectations and deadlines are to be provided. This leadership style is appropriate in the situations like a crisis or an emergency situation, where there is no time for decision making. Clear expectations and deadlines make the followers to finish the task rapidly.
b) Democratic leadership: This leadership allows the participation of followers or team members in planning a task or in giving the input. It is the most effective leadership style as the cooperation from the employees can be ensured and it can be used in any situation to be more creative. But this style of leadership is not applicable in the situations like emergency or crisis situation.
c) Delegative leadership: This type of leadership is type of ' hands- off ' leadership . After assigning the task , the Leaders will not be involved in any decision making or any guidance, but they put trust in their subordinates. This style of leadership can be applied in situations where there is involvement of highly qualified experts. When the Leaders are highly relying the motivation and capabilities of subordinates, then he can act on this type of leadership. But it may produce less work and less progress and the team members will blame each other for the mistakes.
