Discuss some of the physical changes that can take place in late adulthood, and explain how these detriments may be offset. If they are not offset, what are some of the consequences of these physical changes? Please include two sources
1. The brain shrinks or slows down - brain loses 5-10% of its weight between age of 20-90 years. Volume of brain decreases due to shrinkage of neurons , lower number of synapses , reduced length of axon.
2. Sleep- 50% of older adults have problemin sleeping . This can result in early death and low level of cognitive functioning. To avoid this problem adults should avoid caffeine , extra medicine intake should be avoided , stay physically and mentally active , exercise and proper diet.
3. Immune system- it declines in functioning with age due to high stress levels , malnutrition including low levels of proteins. Exercise can improve the immune sysetm and also influenza vaccination is important.
4. Changes in physical appearance- wrinkles, age spots , shorter due to bone loss in vertebrae , drop in weight , move slowly .
5. Vision- diseases like cataracts , glaucoma and macular degeneration.
6. Hearing - imparments , use of hearing aids and cochlear implants .
7. Health problems - arthiritis , osteoporosis,
