-Briefly explain a few of the significant developments that occur during adolescence and the impact they can have on future development.
Adolescence is a period where one's identity is formed and this includes behavior, thinking skills, performance, mood, and in general personality development. Adolescence is the period when teens tend to become conscious of their actions or remain impulsive. This is the period when memory, attention, creativity, decision making, and organizational skills get developed. Such skills are very important in deciding the future of the adolescent to turn out to be a responsible or reckless young adult. Poor development in any or all of these areas makes the young adult incapable of handling themselves and their priorities.
-Explain the importance of sleep regarding the physical and cognitive changes that occur during adolescence.
Teenagers require 8-10 hours of sleep every night and it must happen at the same time every day. It helps them avoid fatigue and aids physical and mental growth as per adolescence. On a physical level, adolescents find more energy to be awake and active through the activities of the day. On a cognitive level, they can grasp, learn and make decisions consciously. This helps them avoid situations that might be harmful to self and others. It helps avoid mental tensions and anxiety.
-Reflect on your own adolescence. How much sleep were you getting at the time? How might your sleep patterns have impacted your development in the areas you mentioned above?
As an adolescent, I used to sleep every night at the same time and it used to be around 9 hours every day. I tended to feel groggy if I did not get my 9 hours of sleep. I think it has helped me remain active through ou adolescence and therefore helped me learn better. It has helped me contribute more in terms of studies and sports and even made my time for entertainment fruitful. I have never been impulsive and have seen good decision-making capabilities in tough spots.
-On average, how many hours of sleep do you get now? Do you think that sleep is as important now as it was when you were an adolescent? Explain.
I get anywhere between 8-9 hours of sleep now. I still think it is important since there are different kinds of priorities. But relatively, I think adolescence is a more important period where the need for sleep should be much emphasized. A lack of proper sleep hygiene might lead to bigger problems such as insomnia, clinical sleeplessness, and even depression.
