Tetracycline

It is an antibiotic drug that is use to control the ingestion caused by the bacteria.

Name of drug classes and prototype

It is a class of medication called tetracycline antibiotic that prevents the growth and spreading of bacteria in the body.

Mechanism of action

The drug interrupts the protein synthesis of the bacteria by passively difussing through the channel called porin in the bacterial membrane. This leads to bind with the 30S ribosome subunit and stop binding of of tRNA to mRNA complex. Later leads to failure in production of protein in the bacterial cell membrane.

TOP 3-5 adverse effect

The most common adverse effect of this drug includes

- Dark urine

- Hearing changes like ringing sound in the ear and decrease hearing

- Nausea and vomiting

- Abdominal cramp

- brown or gray tooth discoloration

- Numbness or tingling sensation of the hand and feet.

Bacteriostatic or bactericidal / Narrow or broad spectrum

Tetracycline is a broad spectrum polyketic antibiotic drug that act on both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. This also acts as bacteriostatic effect on the bacteria by binding reversible to the 30S ribosomal of the bacteria.

Nursing intervention

- Assess the condition of the patient

- Check the correct dose and route before administering

- Identify that the nurse choose the correct patient or not.

- Administered the drug after proper explanation to the patient

- After administration, observe for adverse effects

- proper documentation should be done in the nurse's notes.

Specific consideration

- Low dose of this rug should be administered to renal failure patient

- Avoid use of this drug to the pregnancy and lactation mother because it could harm the fetus but can be use in emergency condition.

- Prolong exposure to the sunlight should be avoided for the the patient who are taking this medicine because of chances of developing photosensitivity

- This medicine is restricted to take for children less than 8 years.
