Provide your understanding of "Multiple Intelligences". Is there a place in our educational system for Multiple Intelligences, and should parents embrace Howard Gardner's theory? If so, why?
In my opinion, the Multiple Intelligences theory challenges us to view intelligence as a concept that covers a range of abilities and skills, that extend much beyond what is traditionally thought of as merely an IQ score. The theory discusses the ability of individuals with exceptional skills in their respective fields as displaying varied forms of intelligence. For instance, an architect displays visual-spatial intelligence in his work, a dancer represents bodily kinaesthetic intelligence and a psychologist is high on interpersonal intelligence.
I feel that our educational system can benefit from harnessing these different types of intelligence from childhood itself. I would imagine in such a model of education, we would have people who focus solely on developing their strengths instead of striving to fit themselves according to a preestablished standard. The result would would not just be an increase of highly skilled individuals but also greater self acceptance of one’s uniqueness.
