The healthcare provider (HCP) orders Humulin NPH insulin 24 units plus Humulin R insulin 10 units subcutaneous every afternoon prior to evening meal. How many total units will the nurse administer to this patient? Can these insulins be mixed into one syringe?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Insulin is a hormone injected subcutaneously to control and maintain blood sugar level. There are different types of insulin

Here Humulin R is a fast acting insulin and it is already in a soluble form

Humulin NPH is an intermediate acting insulin. It lasts longer .

Both these insulin can be mixed together and administered subcutaneously

First clear insulin or Humulin R has to be withdrawn after instilling 10units of air .Then the Humulin NPH has to be withdrawn without any air bubbles that is 24 units. So the total units to be administered is 34units
