The healthcare provider prescribes and IV solution of regular insulin (Humulin-R) 100 units in 250 ml of 0.45% saline to infuse at 12 units/hour. The nurse should program the infusion pump to deliver how many ml/hour?
Given,
Prescribes IV solution of regular insulin (Humulin-R) 100 units in
250 ml of 0.45% saline to infuse at 12 units/hour.
Using unitary method:-
100 units contain 250 ml saline
1 unit contain =250/100 ml saline
12 units contain = (250/100)×12 ml saline
=30 ml saline
Hence, 12 units = 30 ml
Infusion rate =12 units/hour
=30 ml/hour
Therefore, the nurse should program the infusion pump to deliver 30 ml/hour.
Note:- 0.45% saline means half normal saline contain 0.45% w/v NaCl
Normal saline contain 0.9% w/v NaCl
