What are the core concepts of Self-care deficit nursing theory of nursing by Dorothea Orem?
Theory of self-care deficit: It was proposed by Dorothea Orem. The theory of self-care deficit is a part of Orem's general theory of nursing.
The theory of self-care describes how people can be helped through proper nursing practices. This theory explains 5 methods of helping when a person is not capable of caring for himself. The methods are as follows,
1.Acting or doing for another
2.Guiding and directing others.
3.Providing either physiological or emotional support
4.Mintaining a healthful environment to develop personally
5.Educating others.
The theory involves Mainly 4 core components. They are
1.The self-care: It is the ability of the person to care for himself
2.Self care deficit: It refers to when a person is incapable of caring for himself and he needs some external assistance
3.Self care Demand: It refers to the assistance or requests by the client from the nursing agency to meet his self-care.
4.Nursing agency: These are the professionally trained and skilled nurses act and meet the therapeutic self-care demands.
Theory of Self-care Deficit involves
1 Coordination of nursing care in the hospital
2.Cordinating with other staff members such as dieticians, physiotherapist, etc for the effective nursing care delivery
3.Providing the clients all assistance until his full recovery.
4.Discharging and follow up of the patients.
