Case: Your friend, Alice, has a brother who was just diagnosed with Binge Eating Disorder. Alice wants to understand the disorder a little better so that she can be a supportive sister. Alice knows that you are studying eating disorders in your Nutrition 10 class and thought you might be able to answer a few of her questions:
1. What is Binge Eating Disorder? Is it common?
2. My brother often eats large amounts of food late in the evening after the rest of the family goes to bed, is that typical? What are some other behaviors that he might exhibit that we should be aware of?
3. Is my brother likely to experience any physical health effects from his binge eating disorder? (list at least 3 possible physical effects her brother might experience)
4. How is binge eating disorder different from bulimia nervosa?
5. Alice tells you that her brother is seeing a registered dietitian, a behavioral therapist, and is also attending a support group. Alice was surprised when her brother mentioned he was advised to avoid weight-loss diets in the beginning. Why would his therapist want him to avoid weight-loss diets initially?
Binge eating disorder is a disorder that involves lot of eating at once without purging and it is different from bulimia nervosa on the basis of purging mainly. And also bulimia nervosa is more seen in adolescence whereas the another one in adult.
