You see that your patient has orders for two antibiotics: cefotaxime (Claforan) 1 g in 100 mL of NS IV to be infused over 2 hours twice daily and amikacin 500 mg every 8 hours in 250 mL of NS to be infused IV over 1 hour. Your patient is also receiving an IV continuous infusion of NS at a rate of 100 mL/hr. What is your patient’s total 24 hour IV fluid intake?

Expert Solution

so the prescription of doctor I suppose is

Rx

Inj Cefotaxime 1g in 100 ml NS IV over 2 hours every 12 hrly

inj Amikacin in 500mg in 250 ml NS IV over 1 hour every 8 hrly

IV continuous NS infusion. at 100ml/hr

so for CEFOTAXIME for twice daily in 2 hours it becomes 100ml+100ml = 200ml

for AMIKACIN for thrice (8 hrly) in 1hour becomes 250ml+250ml+250ml = 750ml

IV NS infusion at 100ml/hr calculation is for 24hrs - 4hrs(cefotaxime) - 3hrs(Amikacin) = 17 hrs = 17 x 100(ml/hr) = 1700ml

So final total is 200 + 750 + 1700 ml over24 hrs = 2650ml
