Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Dose available = 80 gms in 1000 mL

desired dosage= 8 gms

formula for calcualting a medication dosage= desired dose/ dose available * quantity available

8/80*1000=100 mL , volume to be infused over 30 minutes

Standard macrodrip IV drip administration set have drop factor= 15gtt

For calculating the flow rate formula= Total volume to be infused/time in minutes* drop factor

100/30*15= 50 drops/minute

2. Calculate the amount of medication per mL

available dose= 80gm/1000ml,

1mL= 80/1000= 0.08 g is the concentration per mL

To calcualte mililiter per hour or infusion rate= Dose per hour desired/ concentration per ml

Dose per hour desired= 2g/Hr

2/0.08= 25mL/Hr is the flow rate that has to be set on the infusion pump
