The physician orders, "One liter of D5 1/2 Normal Saline to infuse in 8 hours. The drop factor of the IV tubing is 15 gtt/ml. What is the flow rate (ml/hr)?

Solutions

Expert Solution

To calculate just the ML /hour of infusion is

Total volume in ml divided by the total time in hours is equal to ml per hour.

Given solution is D51/2 normal saline one liter

Time given is 8 hours

One liter=1000ml

So the total ml per hour is

1000/8=125ml/hour

Answer is 125ml/hour

To calculate gtts / min according to drop factor 15 gtts/ml

Total volume divided by total hour ×60 multiply with drop factor

125/1×60=2.08

2.08 multiply with iv drop factor

2.08×15= 31.2 gtts/min.
