A patient is admitted to the hospital in sickle cell crisis. The orders from the physician include:

IV D5W/ ½ NS at 150 cc/hr

Zofran 8 mg IV q8h

Morphine sulfate 5 mg IV prn

Hydrea 10 mg/kg/day PO

Folic acid 0.5 mg daily PO

Calculate cc/hr to set the IV pump to infuse Zofran 8 mg. Supply: Zofran 8 mg added to 50 cc D5W to infuse over 15 min.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The info of order that we have in hand is: Zofran 8 mg in 50 cc NS IVPB q 8 hr.

To be infused over 15 minutes.

Therefore:

15 min : 50 cc :: 60 min : X cc

15 X = 3000

X = 600 cc/hr

The nurse sets the electronic pump to deliver 600 cc/hr and after 15 minutes the 50 cc of medication would have been infused.
