Employee selection is a process of choosing the right individual for the right job. It is based upon the qualifications and skills that should match the organisation. The selection process is planned and it requires screening of an individual to make sure that the qualifications match the characteristics requested in the job description
Selection is a planned and prolonged process. It begins with the interview of the applicant and ends with the contract of the employment.
EMPLOYEE SELECTION PROCESS:
They are several steps in the process of selection, which takes place as follows
1. REVIEW OF JOB APPLICATIONS :
These steps include a review of the applications of the candidates for the vacant positions, and to make sure that the qualifications match the organisation.
2. PRELIMINARY INTERVIEW:
This step includes a selection of those candidates who meet the eligibility criteria of the organisation and the skills, interests and competencies are checked during the preliminary interview. This is also called as screening interviews.
3. WRITTEN TESTS
The selection process consists of a written test, which is essential to assess the cognitive behaviour of an individual, it is a systematic method to measure and evaluate the potentiality of the candidate. The various tests are aptitude test, intelligence test, personality test and reasoning test. These are known as standardized tests.
4.INTERVIEW
This step includes interaction between the candidate and the interviewer. It is used to find out if the candidate is suitable and competent for the job.
5.MEDICAL EXAMINATION
Medical tests and physical examinations are conducted for certain organisations to determine the physical fitness and capabilities of the individual
6. FINAL SELECTION
This step includes selection of the candidate who has met all the criteria of the organisation, and a job offer is given to the candidate along with the appointment order.
This is the selection process of an employee.
PURPOSE OF AN EMPLOYEE EVALUATION
1.Employee evaluation is also called as performance appraisal, it is the oldest and universal method. It is a formal evaluation of how well the employee has performed in their duties.
2.It is a systematic examination to understand the strength and weaknesses of the employee, and also helps in development to improve the quality of performance .
3.It is an ongoing and continuous process .
4.It serves as a feedback to the employee, by making the employee aware of how well they are performing their duties in the organisation .
5.They improve interpersonal relationships among the group and increases teamwork .
6.They determine the training and development needs of an employee and helps the discover aspirations.
7.Evaluations also provide feedback to the employee and the emphasis is on the performance and potential of the employee.
8.It promotes positive work environment which enhances productivity.
9.It helps to develop confidence among the employees.
10.It motivates the employees to improve they performance , by informing them and suggesting necessary changes in his knowledge ,behaviour and attitude.
These are the purposes of an employee evaluation .
