explain Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). How do the SEL principles apply to health education? Provide two specific examples of how you can promote Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in your classroom (or within the programs you may implement outside of the classroom for my non-education majors).
Social emotional learning (SEL) is a process in which individuals understands self, control emotions, set positive goals, establish a healthy relationship and develop empathy as well as other positive skills to become success in career and life.
The main principles of Social emotional learning are:
Self awareness helps in understanding own emotions, values, personality, health behaviour and outcomes. Self management helps the emotions and behaviour to be in control and in practicing stress relieving and health enhancing behaviour. It improves mental health and mental hygiene. Responsible decision making skills plays a vital role in planning goals, dealing with challenges and risks, analyze behaviour of patient as well as family members to avoid conflict. Also develop empathy and problem solving skills. Social awareness includes practices,and health enhancing behaviour to reduce health risk. Relationships skills helps to develop interpersonal relationships with patients as well as others for promoting health as well as diesease prevention. Also analyses the influence of family peer, culture and media on health behaviour.
We can promote social emotional learning in classrooms through:
(a) Group activities- working in group helps in developing healthy interpersonal relationships, responsibilities and teaches how to manage conflicts in groups.
(b) Through roleplay-Roleplays helps in learning morals, identifying social problems, developing empathy and a healthy social behaviour.
