Are HIV and AIDS communicable diseases or infectious viruses?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Communicable diseases are spread from person to person or from animal to person. The spread or transfer can happen through the air, through contact with contaminated surfaces, or through direct contact with blood, feces, or other bodily fluids.

communicable disease is an infectious disease transmissible (as from person to person) by direct contact with an affected individual or the individual's discharges or by indirect means (as by a vector).

AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By killing or damaging cells of the body's immune system, HIV progressively destroys the body's ability to fight infections and certain cancers.

HIV is spread only in certain body fluids from a person who has HIV. These fluids are blood, semen, pre-seminal fluids, rectal fluids, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. In the United States, HIV is spread mainly by having sex or sharing injection drug equipment, such as needles, with someone who has HIV.

Thus we can say that AIDS is a communicable disease caused by an infectious or contagious virus called HIV

Retroviruses such as HIV, the causative agent in AIDS, are RNA viruses, that is, their hereditary material is RNA not DNA. However, the retrovirus carry a gene for Reverse Transcriptase, and enzyme that converts viral RNA to DNA. Does reverse transcriptase violate the rules for the Central Dogma? i.e., DNA->RNA-> Protein?

Ecology of human infectious diseases focuses on the interactions between pathogens (e.g. viruses, bacteria, fungi) or parasites (e.g. protozoa, helminthes) and their human hosts. Using the one disease you are familiar or the disease you worked in your term project as an example, to discuss the need and importance to understand the interactions among various changing ecological factors, pathogens/parasites and human hosts.

Although infectious disease control and emergency preparedness remain vital to the public’s health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries are now the leading causes of disability and premature death. Cancer and diabetes are NCDs that are responsible for more than 50% of deaths worldwide, making them the leading cause of mortality in the world.
